Each cap era explained

The $50M era (2009-2015)

From the September 2009 launch to mid-2015, the Lotto Max jackpot was capped at $50 million. The most-celebrated draw of this era was July 6, 2012, when the game offered its first-ever $100-million total prize pool — a $50M jackpot plus 50 MaxMillions prizes. A single ticket holder in Quebec claimed the jackpot, and 17 of the 50 MaxMillions were also won that night.

The $60M era (2015-2019)

In July 2015, the cap rose to $60 million. The very first draw under the new rules — July 17, 2015 — was won by a syndicate of 20 Rona distribution-centre employees from Boucherville, Quebec, at $55 million. The first-ever $60M draw came two months later on September 25, 2015, with a single anonymous ticket sold in Brampton, Ontario.

The $70M era (2019-2024)

Major rule changes on May 14, 2019 raised the cap to $70 million, expanded the number matrix from 7/49 to 7/50, and added a second weekly draw on Tuesdays. The first-ever $65M draw came June 11, 2019 (Lanteri family, Montreal — their second jackpot in two years). The first-ever $70M draw followed on January 7, 2020, won by Adlin Lewis of Brampton with a Free Play ticket.

The $80M era (Sept 2024 – April 2026)

The cap rose again to $80 million on September 10, 2024, and a new record was set within a week — September 17, 2024 saw the first $80M Lotto Max jackpot, split between Stephanie and Bryan Cantwell of Owen Sound ON and Bernard Morissette of Outaouais QC. Three more $80M wins followed: December 3, 2024 (Jean Lamontagne of Montreal + an Alberta winner), May 9, 2025 (Justin Simporios, Surrey BC — the largest single-individual lottery jackpot in Canadian history at the time), and December 30, 2025 (Greg S. + Krys P. of London ON — the largest total payout to date at $80.4 million).

The $90M era (April 2026 onwards)

On April 14, 2026, the cap rose once more to $90 million, with simultaneous changes: a new 7/52 number matrix, ticket price up to $6 (with four lines of seven numbers per ticket), and new "MaxPlus" $100,000 prizes — one for every $1M in the jackpot, up to 90 at the cap.

The largest total payout was $80,403,285.40, won on December 30, 2025 by two longtime friends from London, Ontario (the jackpot plus a $403,285.40 second prize from combination play). The largest single-individual win was Justin Simporios of Surrey, BC, who took home the full $80 million from the May 9, 2025 draw.
How many times has the $80 million Lotto Max jackpot been won?
Four times during the $80M cap era (September 10, 2024 to April 14, 2026): September 17, 2024 (split between Ontario and Quebec), December 3, 2024 (split between Quebec and Alberta), May 9, 2025 (single winner in British Columbia), and December 30, 2025 (single winning ticket shared by two friends in London, Ontario).
When did Lotto Max raise its jackpot cap to $90 million?
On April 14, 2026, the maximum Lotto Max jackpot was raised from $80 million to $90 million. The cap change came alongside a new 7/52 number matrix (up from 7/50), a ticket price increase from $5 to $6, and new "MaxPlus" $100,000 prizes — one for every $1 million in the jackpot, up to 90 prizes when the jackpot reaches the cap.
What was the first-ever Lotto Max jackpot of $70 million?
The first-ever $70 million Lotto Max draw took place on January 7, 2020 — just months after the $70M cap was introduced on May 14, 2019. Adlin Lewis, a 49-year-old credit risk manager from Brampton, Ontario, won the entire prize with a Free Play ticket he had earned from a previous draw, purchased at George's Convenience on Mississauga Road.
Which province has won the most Lotto Max jackpots?
Ontario has won the most Lotto Max jackpots overall. According to OLG, Ontario players have won more than 120 Lotto Max jackpots and nearly 1,000 MaxMillions prizes since the game launched in September 2009. Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta also have multiple major jackpot wins.
When did Lotto Max launch and what was the original cap?
Lotto Max launched on September 25, 2009, replacing Lotto Super 7. The original jackpot cap was $50 million. The cap has been raised four times since: to $60M in July 2015, to $70M in May 2019 (with a matrix change to 7/50 and the addition of Tuesday draws), to $80M in September 2024, and to $90M in April 2026.
What are MaxMillions and when are they added to the jackpot?
MaxMillions are supplemental $1 million prize drawings that are added to a Lotto Max draw once the main jackpot reaches $50 million. The number of MaxMillions grows with each subsequent rollover. To win a MaxMillions prize, a ticket must match all seven numbers exactly in one of the MaxMillions selections — partial matches do not qualify.
Has the $80 million jackpot ever been won by a single individual?
Yes — Justin Simporios of Surrey, BC won the full $80 million from the May 9, 2025 Lotto Max draw on a single ticket, making it the largest single-individual lottery jackpot in Canadian history at the time of his win (per BCLC). He had purchased the Quick Pick ticket spontaneously at the Walmart Supercentre Central City while shopping for burger buns.
Are Lotto Max winnings taxed in Canada?
No. Lottery winnings in Canada are not subject to federal or provincial income tax. Winners receive the full advertised prize amount as a tax-free lump sum. Subsequent income generated from investing the winnings (interest, dividends, capital gains) is taxable under normal income tax rules.
How often does the Lotto Max jackpot reach the maximum cap?
Reaching the maximum cap depends on how many consecutive draws go without a jackpot winner. Each rollover adds $5 million to the jackpot. During the $70M cap era (2019-2024), the cap was reached multiple times per year. Under the new $90M cap (April 2026 onwards), reaching the maximum may take longer simply because the journey from $10M reset to $90M requires 16 consecutive rollovers.
